Private George Rothwell Seager was born on 12 September 1897 in Willowgrove, Gippsland, Victoria. He enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy in June 1912 and was amongst the first intake of boys to join the HMAS Tingira. In October 1914 George resigned from the RAN and joined the AIF, falsely claiming his age as 19 years and 1 month.
George enlisted with the 9th Light Horse Regiment in the Machine Gun section and embarked from Melbourne on the Karroo on 11 February 1915.
He was killed at Walker’s Ridge, Gallipoli, in the battle of Lone Pine on 7 August 1915, aged 17 years 10 months. He is buried in Ari Burnu Cemetery, Gallipoli.
George had two older brothers who also fought at Gallipoli, Captain HaroldHastings Seager MC and Sergeant Ernest Seager DCM.
George Seager was the recipient of the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
